Exactly what is success? The dictionary defines is as "accomplishing what is attempted; a person or a thing that prospers." Success may be measured by wealth, position, family relationships, or dozens of personal or professional variables. But regardless of how we define it, success means something rather specific to each of us.
Hard work alone will not make us successful. the willingness to work hard may be a big part of our success, but its not the only factor. Many of us work hard and never succeed. Some of the most obviously qualified fail, and some with tremendous handicaps succeed. Clearly something besides hard work accounts for the difference between success and failure.
According to Earl Nightingale, the secret of success lies in forming the habit of doing the things that failures don't like to do. Success is achieved by only minority of people. Therefore, it's "unnatural"; we cannot achieve it by following our natural instincts, habits, or preferences.
What are some of the things failures don't like to do that successful people are willing to do? According to Nightingale, they are the things no one likes to do. In working with time problems, for example, most people don't like to clarify objectives, record and analyze their time, or plan for week.
If no one likes to do these things, why do some people do them while others don't? Successful people don't like to do them, but they know that doing these things will help them achieve their goals. In other words, unsuccessful people are motivated by pleasing methods and will accept whatever results they can obtain from doing only what they like to do.
All of us go into a slump from time to time when things we don't like to do seem to become more important than our reasons for doing them. We find it easier to adjust to the hardships of poor results than to face the hardships of improving results. Just think of all the things. We're willing to do without in order to avoid doing the things we don't like!
Since success is not a natural state, we will have to change to be successful. We must set our sights higher.
